MEDIA
To support 5 a Day—Power Play! activities organized by each regional lead agency, the statewide 5 a Day—Power Play! Campaign coordinates media and public relations activities to support the 5 a Day and physical activity messages. These include:
National Nutrition Month – March The American Dietetic Association annually sponsors National Nutrition Month® in March. This education and outreach campaign is aimed at increasing awareness about making healthy food choices and improving eating and physical activity habits. To celebrate the 2005 National Nutrition Month, Sierra Cascade Region 5 a Day—Power Play! participated in Lean-N-Green Day in Shasta County to promote the 5 a Day and physical activity messages.
Spring Into Health – April through June The American Cancer Society and the California Children's 5 a Day—Power Play! Campaign brings together kids, good nutrition and physical activity for Spring into Health. For example, many school children participated in Nutrition Decathlon Events to celebrate Spring into Health. Carrot hop, melon weightlifting, strawberry relay, the apple toss and taste testing were all big hits. Hundreds of youth participated in the Spring into Health Poster Contest sponsored by Food Maxx and 5 a Day—Power Play!
National 5 a Day Month – September
Local activities for National 5 a Day month have included conducting the 5 a Day Challenge where students and teachers take the challenge to eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and be physically active for 60 minutes every day for better health. Participants are eligible for drawings to win fun prizes to promote physical activity.
International Walk to School Week – October
Parkview Elementary School in Chico, CA joined schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk or Bike to School Day on October 5, 2005. The idea is to walk or bike to school together with a purpose — to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment.
